Helps with
Kindness
Sharing and friendship: feeling the tug of "mine!" and choosing kindness anyway.
The tool your child practises in the story
Kind deeds make the garden grow
Draw a garden on paper and add a flower for every kind deed: sharing, taking turns, helping or a kind word. When sharing feels hard, say the turn-taking words together, "My turn, then your turn", and use a timer if it helps. Praise the effort, even when the "mine" feeling is still there.
For grown-ups
What this story is about
A new friend wants a turn with your child's favourite red watering can, and a big "mine!" feeling shows up. The story shows that this feeling is normal and allowed: your child feels it, takes a breath and chooses kindness one small step at a time, right up to the hardest turn of all, the first go with the red can. Every kind deed makes the magic garden grow.
Three ways to talk about it
- Name the feeling without judging it: "It's hard to share something you love. That 'mine' feeling is big."
- Notice small kind deeds out loud, like taking turns, helping or saying something nice: "That was kind. I think a flower just grew."
- Let your child keep a few very special things that don't have to be shared, and practise taking turns with the rest.
Three questions to ask
- Where in your body do you feel a "mine" feeling? What does it feel like?
- Which kind things made the garden grow in the story?
- What kind deed could you plant tomorrow, and for whom?
Practise the tool together: Kind deeds make the garden grow
Draw a garden on paper and add a flower for every kind deed: sharing, taking turns, helping or a kind word. When sharing feels hard, say the turn-taking words together, "My turn, then your turn", and use a timer if it helps. Praise the effort, even when the "mine" feeling is still there.
If sharing and playing with other children stay very hard for a long time, or often end in big upsets, it is worth talking to your paediatrician or a child psychologist.
From a photo to the book
One phone photo is all we need. Here is Hana's photo and the cover we made from it.

Invented example: Hana is a made-up child, not a customer. The photo was made for this example; the book was made from it the same way we make yours.
Look inside
Twelve illustrated spreads: the picture on the left, the story on the right. These sample pages show an invented child called Hana.

Splosh! The water landed on the visitor: a round little bumblebee in a tiny green scarf. "Oops! Sorry!" The bee wrung out her scarf. Drip, drip. "Good morning to you too. I'm Buzzy." She pointed one little leg at a round patch of bare soil, edged with white stones. "Nothing grows there," she said. "Not yet." Rustle, rustle, went the hedge.
Hana watered one row of daisies first. Swish, swash. Then, slowly, the red can went out to Pip. "My turn... then your turn." The mine feeling was still there. Just a little. Pip watered the next row, very, very carefully. Then: pop! Right in the middle of the bare patch, a tiny blue flower opened. "Buzzy! Did you see that?" Buzzy only smiled.
Pop, pop, POP! Flowers burst open everywhere: blue and orange, yellow and pink, tall ones, tiny ones, curly ones. Buzzy zoomed from bloom to bloom. Then Pip turned round, and everybody laughed, Pip most of all. Tiny flowers were growing all over his spines! "Pip! You're a garden too!"

Inside the book
Twelve illustrated spreads: the picture on the left, the story on the right. This sample uses an invented family to show the illustration style.

Mia had a little garden behind the house, and in it, one favourite thing: a small, bright red watering can. Swish, swash, sprinkle! The tomatoes drank. The daisies drank. "Every plant gets a drink. From MY red can." Then something small and fuzzy landed right on the spout.
